It’s a big day for LGBT people in Britain after the Queen signed into law the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act which allows gay couples to get married. Despite some very nasty things said in parliament by opponents, the leaders of all three major political parties supported it and it passed all votes with overwhelming majorities. It is brilliant news and I’m very proud to live in this country today. The United Kingdom is now the 16th country to bring in equal marriage rights.
Naturalistic Pantheists believe strongly in equality as outlined in principle 4 – “All humans are equal centers of awareness of the Universe and Nature, and all deserve a life of equal dignity and mutual respect. To this end we support work towards freedom, democracy, justice and non-discrimination, and a world community based on peace, sustainable ways of life, full respect for human rights and an end to poverty.”
It is a day on which history has been made. It has taken 50 years to move from legalisation to marriage and many people have suffered to advance the cause of equality during that time. But today, the last major legal inequality for LGBT couples has been rectified in Britain. And as someone who is gay, I am so very happy!
